Free Range Media was founded by David Metzler with a commitment to producing bold, dynamic and innovative content for television, film and new media. The company builds on his track record of delivering shows with rich, narrative storytelling and high production values within reasonable budgets. Metzler’s distinct creative stamp can be seen in his award-winning and highly popular television projects.
Free Range Media is currently producing Season 2 of The Lazy Environmentalist for Sundance Channel with Metzler executive producing. Hosted by Josh Dorfman, the show premiered in the spring of ‘09 and its successful run led to a second order. Season 1 won the 2009 Environmental Media Award.
FRM is also producing Treehugger TV for Planet Green with Metzler executive producing. Adapted from the website treehugger.com, the first installment will air in April.
Prior to founding Free Range Media, Metzler’s role as Executive Producer of the smash hit Queer Eye for the Straight Guy earned him a Primetime Emmy Award, the Producer’s Guild of America’s Producer of the Year Award and two GLAAD Media Awards. The show has garnered critical, professional and public praise, and the success of the series led to a spin-off, Queer Eye for the Straight Girl, as well as 20 international versions airing in over 120 countries.
Metzler has executive produced shows for ABC, Bravo, CBS, Lifetime, MTV, Sundance Channel and VH1. He executive produced Sundance Channel’s critically accalimed Big Ideas for a Small Planet, an environmentally themed exploration of the emerging innovations and the innovators who are blazing the trail to a green future. Big Ideas won the 2007 Environmental Media Award for Best Documentary.
Metzler began his career working in all aspects of production for television, film and commercials. He also taught creative writing classes at several colleges. He taught screenwriting at Boston University and created and taught "Writing Beat" at Tufts University, a class based on Jack Kerouac’s spontaneous prose writing method. The class was one of the most highly rated classes by students at Tufts Experimental College.
Metzler has a B.S. in Film Production from Ithaca College an an M.S. in Screenwriting from Boston University. He is a member of the Producers Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
